Star Trek Into Darkness Extended Trailer: Gary Mitchell?
Trailers for trailers – an unfortunate reality of the world we live in. I can sit here and whine about it, or I can talk about how as far as these trailer teasers go, Star Trek Into Darkness’ is phenomenal. In just over a minute, it embodies everything that made the first one great: epic character moments, compelling dialogue, high stakes, and lens flares.
While the line about “vengeance” in the trailer, spoken by a brooding Benedict Cumberbatch (who already in the teaser makes for a more engaging villain than Nero), would seem to indicate a Khan approach, signs seem to indicate the villain this time is….drum roll…wait for it….Gary Mitchell.
Let’s hope the threat he presents is more intimidating than his name. Let me synopsize this guy for non-fans:
Early in the television show, Gary Mitchell was this dude who was friends with Captain Kirk. They were, like, best buds, and one day Gary was like, whoa, I have telekinesis powers, and everybody was like, “Damn, Gary! That’s sick!” But his powers were reasonable still, so it was more like… “okay, Gary. That’s sort of neat.” Then they fly through some sort of wacky space radiation, and his powers go bananas. And then his powers weren’t reasonable anymore and he went space super saiyan developed a God complex and wanted to kill errbody.
That’s more or less the gist of it. But the formula of “unstoppable villain who wants to kill everyone,” mixed with Cumberbatch’s complex and nuanced acting, makes this an exciting prospect.
If it even is Gary Mitchell. Maybe it’s Garth of Izar. Maybe it’s some other silly Star Trek villain that my lack of knowledge of the show would prevent me from speculating on. (That’s your cue, David Robinson). And don’t forget that Space Sherlock Holmes and Space Smaug the Dragon in Human Form have not yet been ruled out.
Let the speculation begin. I’ve included the extended trailer. It’s has Japanese subtitles, but includes footage not seen in the American trailer. Don’t forget to leave comments.

I’m glad that others came to this same conclusion. As soon as I saw that he was wearing a Starfleet uniform, my Trekkie senses started tingling. Really, any villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch is automatically better than Nero, Shinzon and the wrinkly old guys from Insurrection. Gary Mitchell was a fascinating character who would bring a lot of emotional depth to the film. Just sayin’.
