Music to My Ears: Champion’s Road

Music to My Ears continues with a look at a song from a game we finally got to play — although really, it’s a song from other games we already know and love.

As you’ve noticed, we assembled the old gang to play through Super Mario 3D World for our let’s play series. So far it’s been quite entertaining, and the four-player co-op hasn’t been as disastrous as I thought going in. That playthrough finishes up this weekend with the final two parts, so check them out if you get a chance.

Champion’s Road is a theme that plays a couple of times in the game, most notably on a level called “Champion’s Road” (I know, woahhhhh). More importantly, it’s a fully orchestrated and more uptempo version of the Gusty Garden Galaxy theme from Super Mario Galaxy.

Gusty Garden Galaxy quickly became one of the most beloved tracks from that game, so much so that it was used as the background music in the first trailer for Galaxy 2. It’s an exuberant, uplifting song that has only gotten stronger with full instrumentation.

The 3D World version gives us a cool beat to go with the familiar melody, as well as some awesome piano arpeggios when the most familiar part of the song kicks in. That section alone is what has had me listening to this track on repeat for the last couple days.
