Music to My Ears: L’Arlesienne Second Suite

Music to My Ears continues with a song that will rock you in your sleep.

Catherine is a game that I’ll probably never play myself, especially after being in the room when Jason tackled it. Still, I thought the concept was interesting. Crazy dreams, pillows that grant extra lives, and a choice between sexy Catherine and marriage-material Katherine? Sure, why not?

One of the charming things about Catherine’s soundtrack (composed by Shoji Meguro, best known for his work with the Shin Megami Tensai and Trauma Center series) is that it has two very distinct vibes. By day, the music showcases some interesting and jazzy original tracks. But at night, when nightmares become real and sheep become allies, all of the tracks are repurposed classical music with an updated feel.

L’Arlesienne Second Suite is the background music for several of the six stages of The Empireo, which essentially serves as a gauntlet before the end of the game. These levels are not messing around – they take all the puzzle concepts that you’ve learned to this point and turn them up to 11. And to make things even more miserable, a boss chases you on 9-5 and 9-6 and new block types are introduced at the very end.

L’Arlesienne is a play by Alphonse Daudet with music composed by Georges Bizet. This version of the song features a few elements that certainly won’t around in the late 1800s, however, like a wailing electric guitar.

While I was watching Jason play through the majority of Catherine, I recognized quite a few of the classical pieces that received a facelift, but nothing popped out more than L’Arlesienne. After struggling to place it for a while, I finally made the connection: it was one of the included demo songs on my keyboard from when I was younger! So a track that I learned to play as a teenager happened to make an appearance more than a decade later. Pretty freaky stuff if you ask me.
