ATB’s Top 25 Zelda Items: (20) Din’s Fire

No more games, no more pretense — this is our list of the top 25 Zelda items of all-time. Whether they were weapons or shields or utility items, these are the panel’s selections for the coolest or most useful inventory slots in the series. We’ll be counting down one by one until we reach the #1 pick on Jan. 31.

20) Din’s Fire – 5 votes, 112 points

Shaun: Other than a puzzle or two, Din’s Fire really doesn’t do anything that other items like Deku Sticks and Fire Arrows don’t do. So why is it number 20 on our list? Easy — it’s the sheer epicness that results from using this spell.

Up until the moment when I first used Din’s Fire, I had never really played Zelda game that involved Link utilizing “Magic.” So imagine my surprise when I lit up Din’s Fire and pulled out a devastating fire spell straight from Dragonball Z. In a flash, everything in the room is either dead or on fire. Din’s Fire is one of the (many) reasons OoT Link is my favorite in the series, which makes it worthy of a vote all on its own.

Chris: You can picture this item in your head. Link does some kind of pseudo-jutsu move with his hands, punches down on the ground, and fire erupts in an expanding radius all around him. Cool, right?

My lasting memory of Din’s Fire will always be the entrance to the Shadow Temple, where someone thought it would be a cool idea to put nine million torches in a room, all of which have to be lit to gain entrance. (Is it possible to light one with a Fire Arrow and then Deku Stick around the room like a madman? Probably not, but why the hell would you anyway?) That’s the moment when Link gets to be the coolest of cool guys.

I’m surprised that we haven’t seen more spells in the series. They were fairly common through Ocarina of Time, but have all but disappeared since. Now the Magic Meter is used for things that are distinctly not magical, when we could have awesome fire spells instead. Pity.

Joseph: The Bombos Medallion of the 3D world. I did not use many of the spells in Ocarina of Time. It seemed like it took too much time to queue it up and use it. I might as well have just fought off the enemies the regular way.

Michaela: I find it disappointing that Link has only learned a few spells in the series, because this one is by far one of the best and coolest. I never have qualms wasting my magic with this spell because of how neat it is, and having fire surrounding you like a boss is awesome, not to mention it’s cleverly woven into some of the puzzles.

Cary: I think we can all agree that fire is cool. Well…not “cool” cool but…hot. Like sexy and dangerous all at once. So what a thing it must feel like to be surrounded by a shield of fire. Oh yes…yes!…that’s Din’s Fire, one of the first spells Link receives in Ocarina of Time. Rather than being some kind of old-timey, shoot fireballs kind of spell, using Din’s Fire engulfed Link in a fiery force field that incinerated nearby enemies. But Din’s Fire wasn’t just a one-minute man. Oh no, it was versatile and could be used to burn obstacles like webs, as well as light torches. And it was necessary to have to access OoT’s Shadow Temple. Because nobody likes a unitasker.
