17) Zora Mask – 2 votes, 131 points
Chris: This is my favorite item in Majora’s Mask, and I don’t think it’s close.
After slogging through the beginning of the game stuck as Deku Link, then tromping around as the exceedingly fat Goron Link, you head out to Great Bay and help a poor Zora who seems to be in bad shape. After soothing his soul with the Song of Healing, your reward is the Zora Mask, which turns the kid version of Link into a certified badass.
Wanna swim through the water at breakneck speed, shooting out of the waves like a fish torpedo? You got it. Interested in having arms that function as twin boomerangs? You’re in luck. Wanna turn your ocarina into a guitar and shred until your fingers fall off? I have some good news for you. Do you think having an electrical shield underwater to crush your enemies sounds cool? Check this out.
(Also, Zora Link is ripped out of his mind, which is…um…interesting.)
Sure, you’re weak to fire as a Zora, but you couldn’t be all-powerful without attracting attention. Unless you’re Fierce Deity Link. But more on him later.
Shaun: You know how in Lord of the Rings, the Elves are by far the superior race? You have Hobbits and Dwarves and Humans and that’s all fine, but no one in their right mind, if given the choice of what to be, would be like “you know what? I think I’ll take the Hobbit.” No. It’s all about Elves in Lord of the Rings, and it’s all about Zoras in Zelda. Now that I’ve been one, I can say that. They are jet fighters in the water, have cool fighting abilities, and don’t look like shrubbery or rocks. Hyrule better pray there’s never a race war, because now that I’ve been a Zora, I can tell you they would win with relative ease.
Joseph: Sure, this mask was useful, but I never used it to roll around Termina Field at high speeds. Swimming in Majora’s Mask was not featured very heavily outside of the ocean area, and the boomerang ability of the fins did not draw me toward putting on this mask in my spare time. Still, Zora Link did get the best instrument of the four. Malons swoon for the bone guitar.
