5) Fierce Deity’s Mask – 5 votes, 314 points

Chris: Our top five begins with a huge anomaly.

The Fierce Deity’s Mask has always been insanely popular. There’s no doubt about it. One of Link’s costumes in the newest Super Smash Bros. was the Fierce Deity version, and fans went nuts for that alone. Considering that the item has only appeared in one game (no, I’m not counting Hyrule Warriors), and that one game was released 15 years ago…

Not that the hype is unwarranted, mind you. The child version of Link essentially becomes an adult god, complete with beams shooting out of his badass helix sword, laughing at the idea of needing a shield. Though obtaining the Fierce Deity Mask is a tremendous pain in the ass (unless you like getting 100% in your games, which is fine), the transformation is thoroughly worth it. Taking on Majora’s four forms becomes a cinch if you toss this sucker on your face.

The only thing that holds this item back for me is its limited utility. Unless you’re willing and able to dive into the world of glitches, you can only become this deity against the bosses in the game. I understand the design decision — it’s simply too powerful to let him roam around Termina. But it would have been kinda fun.

Joseph: I can agree that the effect of the mask was awesome, but you do not get a lot of mileage out of it. You can only use it in boss rooms and even then it’s only helpful against maybe three of the five. Cool results, but I think its lack of utility would put it lower on my list.

Shaun: I agree with Joseph and Chris, and here’s the thing – by the time you get the mask, you’ve completed every part of the game anyways. So why not let Link run around Hyrule in a completely broken form? Why can’t I pretend that I’m a god descended down upon this realm, saving for shunning villagers as I see fit and handing down judgement when I feel like it? The mask is undeniably cool, but it could have been so much more. New game plus mode? The world will never know.

Michaela: One of my favorite parts of Majora’s Mask is Link’s transformations through his masks, and the Fierce Deity is by far the best one. It leads to one of the coolest iterations of Link, but also means that you can destroy the final boss without even trying. Yes please.
