Music to My Ears: Main Theme (Ys VIII)

October 2, 2017October 16, 2017 Chris

We’ve given the Legend of Heroes series plenty of love, so why not spend a moment today on another underappreciated JRPG franchise with the phenomenal Falcom Sound Team jdk providing the soundtrack? Ys is Falcom’s most successful property, an action-based … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Main Theme (Ys VIII)

NBA 2K18, and How Microtransactions Lost a Customer

September 25, 2017December 17, 2017 Chris

Sports video games have the reputation of being little more than roster updates and a couple new features on an annual basis. NBA 2K18 decided to break from this mold in a new and horrifying way — by completely breaking … Continue reading NBA 2K18, and How Microtransactions Lost a Customer

The Fall Video Game Lookahead, 2017 Edition

September 21, 2017November 6, 2017 Chris

Each year, the summer comes and goes and we hurtle head-first into fall. Usually that means a full slate of upcoming games that I’m extremely interested in picking up. That’s not the case this year, and I think it’s strange. … Continue reading The Fall Video Game Lookahead, 2017 Edition

Music to My Ears: Confrontation with the Enemy

September 2, 2017April 15, 2025 Chris

One of the cooler things about video game music is its ability to take a situation and turn up the intensity to the max. Some of the genre’s most crucial moments would feel empty and hollow without the tracks … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Confrontation with the Enemy

SummerSlam 2017 Review: Beach Balls and Beef Mauls

August 22, 2017September 25, 2017 Chris

One of the problems WWE faces with its “Big 4” events is bloat. Between the pre-show and the main card, events like Wrestlemania and the Royal Rumble turn into six- to seven-hour affairs, which can be a bit overwhelming for … Continue reading SummerSlam 2017 Review: Beach Balls and Beef Mauls

Music to My Ears: Ark (Persona 5)

August 7, 2017September 2, 2017 Chris

I think I did a pretty good job not posting about Persona 5 for a while. I should get a medal or something. If we’re being honest, I could do a post about a track from this game for a … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Ark (Persona 5)

We’ve spent quite a bit of time on the podcast talking about Kingdom Hearts III — from its trials and tribulations with a release date to what worlds and characters we want to see included in the final build. A … Continue reading What I’d Like to See from Kingdom Hearts 3

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy All-Star Carnival is Legit

July 17, 2017August 22, 2017 Chris

I miss the arcade scene. When I was a kid, you could find cabinets in all sorts of places, not limited to the arcades themselves — restaurants, bowling alleys, airports, even gas stations. Now a ton of arcades are gone … Continue reading Theatrhythm Final Fantasy All-Star Carnival is Legit

Symphony Reviews: Kingdom Hearts, Zelda (redux)

July 7, 2017April 15, 2025 Chris

I had the chance to attend two different video game symphony performances over the last couple weeks: the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour in Hollywood and Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses in Denver. Michaela already wrote about KH here, and … Continue reading Symphony Reviews: Kingdom Hearts, Zelda (redux)

Music to My Ears: Trails of Cold Steel

June 26, 2017April 15, 2025 Chris

Piece by piece, we’re getting a little bit more information about Trails of Cold Steel III, which is exciting to me on a number of levels. Since Legend of Heroes has been gaining some traction in the States, we’re almost … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Trails of Cold Steel

Gray Areas

Gray Areas is a pop culture extravaganza with a live weekly podcast every Thursday night, daily Let's Play videos, and a bevy of old blog posts for your enjoyment.

The current crew includes Chris, Dave and Shaun, who have been there since the beginning, and Cody, who joined in 2021. We also have other contributors like Michaela who chip in from time to time.

We cover everything from video games, anime and movies to music, books and idiots in the news.

This whole thing was started as At the Buzzer in February 2011, the brainchild of three men desperate for attention. It became Objection Network in 2017 and then this in 2024. It’s slightly related to an old Flagstaff radio show from 2008, kinda like how Frasier was slightly related to Cheers. In other words, we're all getting old and it's a little depressing.
