Music to My Ears: Tabi no Tochuu (Spice and Wolf)

January 22, 2018March 5, 2018 Chris

Michaela usually covers the anime stuff around these parts, but I stumbled on a cover of a song that I adored last night. So we’re breaking the rules and covering that in a series that usually focuses on video games … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Tabi no Tochuu (Spice and Wolf)

Persona 5, and the Rare Joy of Replaying Games

January 15, 2018February 12, 2018 Chris

Shaun and Michaela have been playing Persona 5 recently, and that has rekindled my itch to dive in again myself. With my time for gaming getting cut down as I go deeper into my 30s, there aren’t very many games … Continue reading Persona 5, and the Rare Joy of Replaying Games

Music to My Ears: Wintry Arrival

January 8, 2018January 22, 2018 Chris

As we jump into the new year, we’re in a time of transition over on our YouTube channel. We’ll be finished with our playthrough of Trails of Cold Steel this week (after six months of videos to get there). Michaela … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Wintry Arrival

Music to My Ears: Prologue (Horizon: Zero Dawn)

December 14, 2017January 8, 2018 Chris

Horizon: Zero Dawn is among several contenders in a stacked 2017 for Game of the Year candidates. There are some years where Horizon would probably have been the clear consensus pick, but in a year with other titans like The … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Prologue (Horizon: Zero Dawn)

Music to My Ears: Steam Gardens (Wooden Kingdom)

November 21, 2017April 15, 2025 Chris

I thought the first track I would feature from Super Mario Odyssey was “Jump Up, Super Star!” But I was wrong. The standout track from me is a more unassuming piece that surprises you a bit when you first get … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Steam Gardens (Wooden Kingdom)

Music to My Ears: City Ruins (NieR: Automata)

October 16, 2017November 21, 2017 Chris

Now that I no longer have a broken PS4, I’m trying to play catch-up on several of the heavy hitters the console has produced this year. It was a coin flip on whether NieR: Automata or Horizon: Zero Dawn would … Continue reading Music to My Ears: City Ruins (NieR: Automata)

Music to My Ears: Main Theme (Ys VIII)

October 2, 2017October 16, 2017 Chris

We’ve given the Legend of Heroes series plenty of love, so why not spend a moment today on another underappreciated JRPG franchise with the phenomenal Falcom Sound Team jdk providing the soundtrack? Ys is Falcom’s most successful property, an action-based … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Main Theme (Ys VIII)

NBA 2K18, and How Microtransactions Lost a Customer

September 25, 2017December 17, 2017 Chris

Sports video games have the reputation of being little more than roster updates and a couple new features on an annual basis. NBA 2K18 decided to break from this mold in a new and horrifying way — by completely breaking … Continue reading NBA 2K18, and How Microtransactions Lost a Customer

The Fall Video Game Lookahead, 2017 Edition

September 21, 2017November 6, 2017 Chris

Each year, the summer comes and goes and we hurtle head-first into fall. Usually that means a full slate of upcoming games that I’m extremely interested in picking up. That’s not the case this year, and I think it’s strange. … Continue reading The Fall Video Game Lookahead, 2017 Edition

Music to My Ears: Confrontation with the Enemy

September 2, 2017April 15, 2025 Chris

One of the cooler things about video game music is its ability to take a situation and turn up the intensity to the max. Some of the genre’s most crucial moments would feel empty and hollow without the tracks … Continue reading Music to My Ears: Confrontation with the Enemy

Gray Areas

Gray Areas is a pop culture extravaganza with a live weekly podcast every Thursday night, daily Let's Play videos, and a bevy of old blog posts for your enjoyment.

The current crew includes Chris, Dave and Shaun, who have been there since the beginning, and Cody, who joined in 2021. We also have other contributors like Michaela who chip in from time to time.

We cover everything from video games, anime and movies to music, books and idiots in the news.

This whole thing was started as At the Buzzer in February 2011, the brainchild of three men desperate for attention. It became Objection Network in 2017 and then this in 2024. It’s slightly related to an old Flagstaff radio show from 2008, kinda like how Frasier was slightly related to Cheers. In other words, we're all getting old and it's a little depressing.
