Avatar, Relationships Done Right pt. 2: Mai & Zuko

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my continuing look at Avatar: The Last Airbender and how the relationships between the characters within it. If you missed the previous post (here) about Sokka, be sure to check it out! This week I’ll be discussing the relationship between arguably one of the series’s most important characters, Prince Zuko, and his knife wielding girlfriend Mai.

Now as many of you have watched the show may know, Prince Zuko is a pretty integral part of the over-all Airbender plot. So much so, in fact, that if I tried to cover every detail and change in his character over the course of the series I’d have to write one HELL of a blog; with a length border-lining on a college thesis. So since I don’t really have the time for that (and I doubt many of you have the time to read it) I’m going to do things a little differently then you may expect and instead focus on Mai and her contributions to the relationship. Hopefully doing so will also help distinguish the troubles that Zuko faces as a person from the troubles that he and Mai struggle with as a couple.

I will also be using WAY more pictures than I normally do. Because pictures are awesome.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Relationships Done Right pt. 1: Sokka

Yes, I’m on an Avatar kick as of late. But it occurred to me the other day while playing Tales of Graces f that there sure are some interesting relationships floating around out there in the wide world of shows, movies and video games that exists in this day and age. From Aeryn Sun & John Crichton to Han & Leia, there is a couple out there for just about every kind of real life relationship. Yet not all fictional relationships are made equal. While some of them are painfully true to real life, others seem just about a shallow and fake as a certain sparkly vampire & oddly same-faced teen we all know of.

Now having just finished watching this week’s rather relationship-heavy episode of Legend of Korra, I got to thinking of how much I like what they are doing with it. The writers (Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko) really have a grasp of how to write “young love,” but don’t shy away from how hard or confusing it can often be. Now while I’d love to dissect this week’s episode of Korra, I gotta leave something for my Monthly Reviews, right? So I’ve decided that for the next few weeks I’m going to break down the relationships for Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show that has reached it’s conclusion and finished its love arcs (for the most part). Games you shouldn’t miss: Alice & Alice: Madness Returns

For those of you who know me pretty well, you won’t be surprised about today’s topic. American McGee’s Alice and its sequel Alice: Madness Returns are two games that, upon my discovery of them, quickly turned me not only into a die-hard fan of the games themselves, but of Alice in Wonderland as a whole. With the exception of MMOs and long RPGs like the Mass Effect and Persona games, no other game series has eaten more of my time. And it’s the only game I’ve decided to play through a third time. Trust me, folks, that doesn’t happen often. Most games are lucky if they can make me play them twice.

My Blasphemous Opinion on Organized Religion

Well, since today is Easter and all, I figured I should at least talk about something semi religion related. After all, I can talk about video games anytime I want, and in fact I often do. But today is a special day when people all over the country gather together and go to church in order to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Yet here I am, at home, not doing that. And what better chance to explain why that is then here! So here it is, my super long post about me, organized religion, and why the two of us just don’t get along.

As I’m sure many of you are aware, today is the ever so wonderful “holiday” of April Fools! So while I’d love to write a wonderfully long-winded blog about something serious or whatever, the fact of the matter is that someone will probably think it’s a joke. So I won’t be doing that today. The Legend of Korra preview: A masterpiece in the making

The day has finally arrived, everyone! Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra finally hit the world wide web yesterday with the early release of its premiere! That’s right, the first two episodes of the show have officially been released for your viewing pleasure. Haven’t seen them yet? Well then check them out HERE! And if the show itself isn’t enough to  convince you to watch it, then perhaps I’ll be able to in this blog…

You see, The Legend of Korra is technically the “sequel” to Nick’s hit television show Avatar: The Last Airbender. A show that followed the adventures and tribulations of a young boy named Aang who woke up after about a hundred years of sleep and found that his people, the airbenders, had been wiped out by the now warring and expansionist Fire Nation. Now Aang isn’t just an airbender, he’s the Avatar, a person who can bend all four elements (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) and is tasked with keeping the world at peace and in balance — a task that his hundred-year sleep pretty much ruined. So he sets off to stop the Fire Nation and restore the world to the way it’s supposed to be, a task that is fully fleshed out in the three seasons that Avatar: The Last Airbender takes up. The show is amazing folks, no joke. It’s on Netflix, GO WATCH IT.

Legal action against Mass Effect 3 ending?

**I’m sure everyone has heard their fair share about Mass Effect 3 this month, and while I’d love to move on to better things I felt this particular piece of news warranted a discussion. Hopefully you’ll agree. Obviously, since this topic deals with the ending of the game, this article contains spoilers.**

Yep, you read that right. It would appear that someone (a Bioware forumite by the name of “El_Spiko”) is actually bringing a case to the Federal Trade Commission claiming that the ending of Mass Effect 3 isn’t just bad, but full out false advertising. Of course the idea of bringing a video game to the Federal Trade Commission over it’s ending is pretty ridiculous. I mean, people don’t exactly press charge every time they go and see a horrible movie (if you could, I’m sure Gary would have by now). But then again El_Spiko isn’t bringing up the claim because of his dislike of the ending, but because he feels the game’s ending (and therefore the product as a whole) was advertised to him and fellow consumer’s falsely. The question is, is he right?

Review: Mass Effect 3

**Well, I did it, folks: I beat Mass Effect 3 in time to get you all a review. I feel I should preface this by mentioning that a certain aspect of Mass Effect 3 deserves a more detailed discussion than can be done without spoiling that part of the game. So if you have yet to beat the game, then be sure to skip the section clearly marked with a spoiler warning.**

Earth is going to need some help...

OK everyone, the time is finally upon us! Mass Effect 3 is here and marks the end of Bioware’s epic space trilogy. Earth has come under attack and it’s up to you, in the shoes of the one and only Commander Shepard, to rally the diverse factions of the galaxy together and save Earth (and the galaxy) from destruction. While I won’t reveal much about Mass Effect 3’s narative, I will say that those of you hoping for a galaxy spanning story where you meet up with old friends (and enemies!) in an attempt to unite them will not be disappointed. The Krogan and the Genophage? Yep, you’ll deal with that. The Quarian and the Geth? Yep, them too. Of course, that won’t come as a surprise to those of you who have played the previous Mass Effect games; and rest assured that your choices in the previous two games will come back to help (or haunt) you.
