Happy Urf Day Everyone!

As I’m sure many of you are aware, today is the ever so wonderful “holiday” of April Fools! So while I’d love to write a wonderfully long-winded blog about something serious or whatever, the fact of the matter is that someone will probably think it’s a joke. So I won’t be doing that today. Plus, all the guys are home today, which means we all get to play some Tales of Graces F and eat some burgers. So there is that too.

Instead, I’ll sum up some of my favorite video game related April Fools pranks that have popped up today…

First up! Blizzard Entertainment. Makers of World of Warcraft and Starcraft… Continue reading “Happy Urf Day Everyone!”

Lost it all

I’m writing in response to Dave’s article on Wednesday about what he would do with 180 million dollars. I must defend myself on a couple points.

Point of defense, number 1: Dave implied that I would buy an island and dedicate it to performing crazy science experiments. This is false. I can hold all the science experiments I need to right in my own home. My roommates provide the appropriate fodder. And science experiments on an island can only lead to scenarios like Lost. Before you know it, I’m jumping through time with polar bears and smoke monsters, destination: purgatory.

Point of defense, number 2: Dave implied that…you know what? Creating a Lost scenario wouldn’t be that bad. Lost is, hands down, the greatest show ever created. Sure, there are shows that are better written, like Breaking Bad. Or shows that feature consistently fascinating characters, like Dexter. But no show explores the themes or tells a story like Lost did. Continue reading “Lost it all”

Making Millions

Recently I happened to catch a commercial saying that the Mega Millions jackpot had reached $300 million. 300 million smackeroos for buying a $1 ticket and getting some numbers right. Usually you see the people who win these are either the elderly or the backwoods poor people who then have no idea what to do with it when they win. Hell, as we covered on our episode last week, people sometimes even throw away their winning tickets. Now the chances of winning this are slim to none, but seeing that made me wonder, what would I do if I ever did win Mega Millions?

First, let’s quickly look at a story of a person that went broke, and we’ve got a doozy for you: Billy Bob Harrell. Billy Bob won $31 million from the Texas Lottery. Life was good for a while…until he couldn’t say no to anyone, including his wife, who asked for a divorce. Billy Bob literally gave away all his money, falling into depression until he eventually committed suicide.

Now that I’ve thoroughly depressed you, I’ll tell you there’s no way that this would ever happen to me. I’ve worked in finance and banking too long to blow through everything that quickly. I can, however, tell you what I’d do. If this is too logical for you, I apologize. Maybe Shaun can do the “buy your own island and conduct mad scientist experiments” blog post on Friday. Let’s assume for these purposes (because it’s easy) that I took the lump sum and only got about 60% of the $300 million. Let’s also assume I have no kids in this scenario, because…well, I don’t. Music to My Ears: Chrono Trigger

NOTE: “Music to My Ears” is a recurring installment based on Chris’s (not so) secret obsession: the music of video games. His Tales of Graces review will be up next week.

In my review for Street Fighter x Tekken, I mentioned how Street Fighter II was one of the big introductions to the world of video game music for me. Ryu’s stage music in particular was one of the driving forces in doing things like getting homework done. And since computers were not a mainstream thing when I was 8 (not to mention mp3 players, iTunes and YouTube), the only way to listen to it was to toss in the cartridge, head to the Sound Test menu and let it rip.

Those foundations laid the groundwork for other tunes that I loved as a kid, like the Castle theme from Super Mario World or Mute City from F-Zero. But the next big landmark was in high school, when I finally got to play what some would call the best RPG of all-time. Continue reading “Music to My Ears: Chrono Trigger”

The Legend of Korra: A show you can’t afford to miss!

The Legend of Korra preview: A masterpiece in the making

The day has finally arrived, everyone! Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra finally hit the world wide web yesterday with the early release of its premiere! That’s right, the first two episodes of the show have officially been released for your viewing pleasure. Haven’t seen them yet? Well then check them out HERE! And if the show itself isn’t enough to  convince you to watch it, then perhaps I’ll be able to in this blog…

You see, The Legend of Korra is technically the “sequel” to Nick’s hit television show Avatar: The Last Airbender. A show that followed the adventures and tribulations of a young boy named Aang who woke up after about a hundred years of sleep and found that his people, the airbenders, had been wiped out by the now warring and expansionist Fire Nation. Now Aang isn’t just an airbender, he’s the Avatar, a person who can bend all four elements (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) and is tasked with keeping the world at peace and in balance — a task that his hundred-year sleep pretty much ruined. So he sets off to stop the Fire Nation and restore the world to the way it’s supposed to be, a task that is fully fleshed out in the three seasons that Avatar: The Last Airbender takes up. The show is amazing folks, no joke. It’s on Netflix, GO WATCH IT.

Anyway…

Back to The Legend of Korra. Continue reading “The Legend of Korra: A show you can’t afford to miss!”

My Favorite Meme

There’s a lot to do on the internet. With Farmville, Facebook, and listening to At the Buzzer, there’s always something to do. However, one of my favorite things to do online is laugh at Internet memes. A meme is defined as an image, video, etc. that is passed electronically from one Internet user to another. Usually this means hilarious pictures, and they deliver more often than not. Internet memes generally follow some sort of template along with words to make the image humorous. An example would be this from the TV show The Office:

So, on that thought, I bring you my three favorite memes ever. Continue reading “My Favorite Meme”

Keep Flag Happy.com

Editor’s Note: Shaun and Dave have switched spots this week so Shaun can pimp his new site and Dave can recover from Vegas. I have no doubt that our radio show is going to lead the three of us to great fame and fortune, but for the past few months I have hedged my bets and worked on a side project with a few like-minded friends, just in case. This side project is keepflaghappy.com, and it launched today. I’m going to explain it to you. Keep Flag Happy is a guide to the numerous happy hour specials in Flagstaff, intuitively … Continue reading Keep Flag Happy.com

Number Four With a Bullet

I had thought that I might be able to go back to back on reviews and do Tales of Graces this week. That was a foolish thought considering that Tales games usually last somewhere around 50 to 60 hours. Shaun and I have been playing with our roommates and are maybe 12 hours in so far, and it’s a very solid game. We’ll see if the review can be ready by next week — I’m not of the mindset that I have to beat something to write about it, but I certainly want to be farther into the game than this.

In the meantime, here’s some random thoughts as we fight off all the snow from the past 24 hours. Continue reading “Number Four With a Bullet”

Legal action against Mass Effect 3 ending?

**I’m sure everyone has heard their fair share about Mass Effect 3 this month, and while I’d love to move on to better things I felt this particular piece of news warranted a discussion. Hopefully you’ll agree. Obviously, since this topic deals with the ending of the game, this article contains spoilers.**

Yep, you read that right. It would appear that someone (a Bioware forumite by the name of “El_Spiko”) is actually bringing a case to the Federal Trade Commission claiming that the ending of Mass Effect 3 isn’t just bad, but full out false advertising. Of course the idea of bringing a video game to the Federal Trade Commission over it’s ending is pretty ridiculous. I mean, people don’t exactly press charge every time they go and see a horrible movie (if you could, I’m sure Gary would have by now). But then again El_Spiko isn’t bringing up the claim because of his dislike of the ending, but because he feels the game’s ending (and therefore the product as a whole) was advertised to him and fellow consumer’s falsely. The question is, is he right?

I’d argue that he is. And here’s why… Continue reading “Legal action against Mass Effect 3 ending?”

In Defense of the Ending of Mass Effect 3 (Spoilers)

It’s almost a complete consensus: the ending to Mass Effect 3 was a disappointment. No resolution. No meaningful buildup. No closure. By all accounts, a failure on every front. However, after pondering a little more and thinking a little deeper, my question is: is it a bad ending? Or is it potentially the most epically epic ending ever?

Don’t get me wrong; as it stands, it’s a pretty subpar ending. It’s full of inexplicable plotholes. It ends a series built on dynamic choices by shoving three rigid choices down the players throat that have nothing to do with the thousands of preceeding choices to that point. It spends no more than seconds explaining what happens to the characters we have invested hours cultivating meaningful relationships with and getting to know.

So, yeah; by all qualifications, this ending is pretty mediocre, and I can agree with that. Fans aren’t even clamoring for a happier ending, necessarily, just one that doesn’t directly contradict the freedom and tone the entire series spent establishing. That’s like changing the ending of Harry Potter 7 to a black-and-white noir thematic style, where Harry removes his glasses in dramatic fashion and rips the head off Voldemort. Cool, maybe, but it defies everything the series stood for.

How can this ending be anything but a failure? Only if there are events going on that are a little deeper than how they first appeared.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
