Review: Saints Row The Third

One of the problems with having this Monday blog spot is that it’s nigh impossible to do a quick turnaround on a review, what with everything releasing on Tuesdays (except movies, but the hell with those). The flip side is that it gives me a chance to dig deep into a new title and give it more than just a cursory look.

Saints Row: The Third is no exception.

In the last six days, I’ve put in somewhere around 25-30 hours into SR3, which allowed me to get through the game and also finish nearly all of the activities and other side missions. As such, I can tell you this much: If you enjoy games that don’t take themselves too seriously and are fun to play, you’ll enjoy Saints Row: The Third. Paraboring Activity

“I couldn’t use the bathroom with the door closed for a week after watching it.”

“I needed a night light in my room.”

“I stopped watching it halfway, and I still can’t sleep with my door open anymore.”

These are all actual testimonials from some people I know after they watched Paranormal Activity. Well, I finally summoned the courage to see what the hype was. I wanted to be traumatized for life. Instead, I got one man’s idiotic journey to provoke the supernatural, and the world’s most pansy demon. Continue reading “Paraboring Activity”

Sports Hate

To start off, I want to clarify something. Hate is not OK. Hate is bad, hate is strong, and I try to never use that word in my day-to-day vocabulary. However, “sports hate” is completely different. Sports hate is great because, like sports in general, it allows the passion of “hate” without the anger behind it. For the rest of this post, any time I say “hate,” it will be in reference to sports hate.

That being said, I hate the University of Arizona. Continue reading “Sports Hate”

Goodbye Forever

Well, the week that I saw coming in an earlier blog post (my first one on the site, actually) has finally arrived. I just wanted to take this time to say goodbye to the majority of my friends and family, because gaming companies have once again conspired to put out pretty much all their good titles in the month of November.

(Disclaimer: Yes, I understand that it’s all an effort from retailers to get in on the big holiday sales season, rather than releasing the next big Zelda game in July when no one cares. Doesn’t mean I have to like it.)

Starting tonight with the midnight release of Saints Row the Third, I might not be going outside for a couple weeks. While that would be an awful strategy in the long run, I’m actually a little bit excited about the prospect for the time being. Continue reading “Goodbye Forever”

Jurassic Park PSA: Raptors are people, too

I watched Jurassic Park the other day. I’ve decided that raptors aren’t as bad as people think. Velociraptors have an unwarranted reputation. Put aside your bias generated from years of watching the Jurassic Park propaganda, and I think you’ll agree with me. Raptors just want to have fun. Look at a raptor. The first thing you’ll probably notice is its sharp teeth. But are we going to degrade an entire populace for their teeth? When you look at me, the first thing you notice are my teeth. Does this mean I’m a raving, carnivorous killing machine? No. The same goes … Continue reading Jurassic Park PSA: Raptors are people, too

No business like snow business

It snowed tonight! It’s the second time in three days! Everything is wonderf–

Okay, I’ll admit it: I’m not a huge fan of snow.

Look, snow is pretty. It’s fun for stuff like sledding or snowball fights or whatever. And I don’t really mind the cold all that much. Plus, Christmas has started to feel even more like Christmas with holiday snow around to help set the mood.

But after living for more than eight years up in Flagstaff, I think snow is starting to wear on me a bit. Yes, it’s partially my fault for still living here, and no, I still don’t hate snow or anything. What I think I’ve realized is that the initial snow is great, but the aftermath is where things start to fall apart. Continue reading “No business like snow business”

A plea on behalf of Hunger Games

Dear Hollywood,

Please don’t mess up the Hunger Games movie. If there is one movie in the next decade that you get right, make it this one. There are way too many factors riding on this movie being successful. I’ve included a list below that will numerically express what these factors are in order.

1. My happiness: If you do to this movie what Joel Shumacher did to Batman and Bane, I will send a vial of my tears to your corporate office.

2. Jennifer Lawrence: She’s a nice girl coming off an Oscar nomination and a good turn as Mystique in X-Men: First Class. Don’t ruin her career.

3. Fans: This book has fans. You will make them sad if this movie is terrible.

A trailer was shown of Hunger Games in which our hero Katniss is seen in the wilderness with her bow. Then a bunch of fire starts blasting, referencing the scene in the book where fire starts blasting. Okay, cool. Looks good. Then I find out that, since they started filming, this scene is all they had. Really? In all this time, you have shots of a bunch of trees? That’s like saying “We’re hard at work at The Dark Knight Rises,” but then only having footage of buildings. So far, all I’ve seen is this weak trailer and a bunch of movie posters featuring the different characters posing with different levels of brooding. Sports Fantasy

Last night, David Robinson, second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, hit 3 home runs and brought his batting average over .400 at the All Star break in the 2015 MLB season.

Some of you might say: “But the Cardinals won the World Series last Friday!” “David Robinson was a basketball player” or “Hey moron! It’s 2011, not 2015.”  You would all be right in saying this, especially the moron part. However, thanks to the miracle of video games, the virtual David Robinson can enjoy a long career doing whatever he pleases.

It doesn’t stop there for the great virtual David Robinson. In addition to being an All-Star major leaguer, he’s also the starting quarterback for #1 Alabama (coming off two national championships in 2011 and 2012). Basketball? Leading scorer for the 2011-2012 Phoenix Suns (yeah, in virtual world, the NBA exists in 2011-12).  He’s even good in hockey, where he made a rare appearance for the Phoenix Coyotes, scoring 4 goals in a game, never to be seen again. Going the Distance

We’ve been posting four days a week consistently for the better part of two months, and as I look through the stats and such for that period (being the webmaster and all), I can’t help but notice one thing: Nothing posts on Tuesdays.

We’ve got M-W-F covered with our blogs, and every other Thursday is a new episode of the show, but … Tuesday is a barren wasteland.

Not anymore.

Starting tomorrow, we’ll introduce a new feature to the At the Buzzer website called “Going the Distance.” GtD was a concept started a few years ago when our college paper was in need of a filler comic strip to replace someone who had abruptly left. At some point I had seen a similar idea on the interwebs, so a friend and I formatted it for strip purposes and a star was born. Continue reading “Going the Distance”
