My Monthly Korra Review for May

The Legend of Korra episodes review (with pictures!)

Hey everyone! I know this is a little bit late, but now that we have regular working internet again I can finally use my computer to make these reviews. Why is it important that I use my computer to post? Well because I don’t really feel like downloading HD version of Korra onto someone else’s computer. And without such easy access to the show I can’t make such awesome screenshots to insert willy-nilly into my review. And in case you haven’t noticed, I like my pictures. Anyway…

If you missed out on last months review, be sure to check it out here. And obviously, since these are reviews, there are going to be spoilers ahead. Of course since I’m sure you’ve been following the show religiously (seeing as you have every reason too) I’m sure that won’t be a problem. That being said, let us begin! Long Live Tentacle Bento!

Hey everyone! I’m taking a break from my scintillating blogs on Avatar romance this week to discuss something that I stumbled upon while cruising the internet: Tentacle Bento. A game that got pulled off of Kickstarter for what we can assume are “moral” reasons. Moral reasons that, as far as I’m concerned, can go *grumble*mumble* themselves.

So what exactly is Tentacle Bento and why am I passing up an opportunity to write about Avatar in order to blog about it? Well I’ll tell you… Continue reading “Long Live Tentacle Bento!”

Family Guy: Shut up

When I was a freshman in college, there wasn’t a more popular show than Family Guy in my dorm. Despite the fact that it had been off the air for a couple of years, the DVDs of that show were on almost every night in someone’s dorm room. The show used jokes that were funny, witty and just plain goofy at times. (Like when Peter was setting up a picnic outside with a red blanket and a bull came and pulverized him.)

The characters were likable as well. Lois was the well-meaning matriarch, Peter was the irresponsible yet loving husband, the kids were normal, Brian was a talking dog and Stewie was an evil baby. All of them fit together well in their own ways.

Yet…the show was canceled. Continue reading “Family Guy: Shut up”

Avatar, Relationships Done Right pt. 2: Mai & Zuko

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my continuing look at Avatar: The Last Airbender and how the relationships between the characters within it. If you missed the previous post (here) about Sokka, be sure to check it out! This week I’ll be discussing the relationship between arguably one of the series’s most important characters, Prince Zuko, and his knife wielding girlfriend Mai.

Now as many of you have watched the show may know, Prince Zuko is a pretty integral part of the over-all Airbender plot. So much so, in fact, that if I tried to cover every detail and change in his character over the course of the series I’d have to write one HELL of a blog; with a length border-lining on a college thesis. So since I don’t really have the time for that (and I doubt many of you have the time to read it) I’m going to do things a little differently then you may expect and instead focus on Mai and her contributions to the relationship. Hopefully doing so will also help distinguish the troubles that Zuko faces as a person from the troubles that he and Mai struggle with as a couple.

I will also be using WAY more pictures than I normally do. Because pictures are awesome.

Buckle up everyone! And let’s get this thing rolling… Continue reading “Avatar, Relationships Done Right pt. 2: Mai & Zuko”

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Relationships Done Right pt. 1: Sokka

Yes, I’m on an Avatar kick as of late. But it occurred to me the other day while playing Tales of Graces f that there sure are some interesting relationships floating around out there in the wide world of shows, movies and video games that exists in this day and age. From Aeryn Sun & John Crichton to Han & Leia, there is a couple out there for just about every kind of real life relationship. Yet not all fictional relationships are made equal. While some of them are painfully true to real life, others seem just about a shallow and fake as a certain sparkly vampire & oddly same-faced teen we all know of.

Now having just finished watching this week’s rather relationship-heavy episode of Legend of Korra, I got to thinking of how much I like what they are doing with it. The writers (Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko) really have a grasp of how to write “young love,” but don’t shy away from how hard or confusing it can often be. Now while I’d love to dissect this week’s episode of Korra, I gotta leave something for my Monthly Reviews, right? So I’ve decided that for the next few weeks I’m going to break down the relationships for Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show that has reached it’s conclusion and finished its love arcs (for the most part). Obviously if you haven’t seen Avatar: The Last Airbender then there are SPOILERS AHEAD. Also, what are you waiting for?! Go watch it on Netflix.

So without further ado, let’s start with our good pal Sokka… Continue reading “Avatar: The Last Airbender, Relationships Done Right pt. 1: Sokka”

Watch Me Make Endings Better (Spoilers)

Frequent show contributor and At the Buzzer movie review Gary Sundt and I are working on a few scripts to break our way into Hollywood (admittedly, Gary is doing a better job than I). I need this to happen, because right now I feel like I’m the only person on the planet who knows how to write a good ending.

Good endings aren’t hard. All you need to do is find the right blend of the ENDING TRIFECTA (patented by me). The ending trifecta is composed of resolution, satisfaction, and artistic closure. Like the perfect recipe, you need a little of each to really have a great ending. If you resolve everything by explaining what happens to every character, but the resolution is that every character is killed in a horrible fashion, this satisfies the resolution and artistic closure of your ending, but offers no fan satisfaction (unless the fans hated your characters). Likewise, if you attempt to satisfy your fans by offering a cookie cutter happy ending, you might sacrifice true character and event resolution, as well as the final exploration of your artistic themes.

It’s a tough balance. Except it’s not. Watch me cover some universally maligned endings and demonstrate how they easily could have been made better. Continue reading “Watch Me Make Endings Better (Spoilers)”
