Lost it all
I’m writing in response to Dave’s article on Wednesday about what he would do with 180 million dollars. I must defend myself on a couple points.
Point of defense, number 1: Dave implied that I would buy an island and dedicate it to performing crazy science experiments. This is false. I can hold all the science experiments I need to right in my own home. My roommates provide the appropriate fodder. And science experiments on an island can only lead to scenarios like Lost. Before you know it, I’m jumping through time with polar bears and smoke monsters, destination: purgatory.
Point of defense, number 2: Dave implied that…you know what? Creating a Lost scenario wouldn’t be that bad. Lost is, hands down, the greatest show ever created. Sure, there are shows that are better written, like Breaking Bad. Or shows that feature consistently fascinating characters, like Dexter. But no show explores the themes or tells a story like Lost did. Continue reading “Lost it all”
No Show This Week
As mentioned on our Facebook page earlier in the week, there won’t be a new episode today due to technical difficulties. I’ll let Shaun explain in this audio clip: So yeah. Basically we got all the way through Buzzerbeater before realizing we were screwed. We checked after Headlines and everything was running smoothly, but the program crashed somewhere in the middle of Buzz Questions. The double whammy is not only did we lose the show, but we essentially have to toss the material — the news, the second segment, everything — because re-recording an improvish setup just does not work … Continue reading No Show This Week
Making Millions
Recently I happened to catch a commercial saying that the Mega Millions jackpot had reached $300 million. 300 million smackeroos for buying a $1 ticket and getting some numbers right. Usually you see the people who win these are either the elderly or the backwoods poor people who then have no idea what to do with it when they win. Hell, as we covered on our episode last week, people sometimes even throw away their winning tickets. Now the chances of winning this are slim to none, but seeing that made me wonder, what would I do if I ever did win Mega Millions?
First, let’s quickly look at a story of a person that went broke, and we’ve got a doozy for you: Billy Bob Harrell. Billy Bob won $31 million from the Texas Lottery. Life was good for a while…until he couldn’t say no to anyone, including his wife, who asked for a divorce. Billy Bob literally gave away all his money, falling into depression until he eventually committed suicide.
Now that I’ve thoroughly depressed you, I’ll tell you there’s no way that this would ever happen to me. I’ve worked in finance and banking too long to blow through everything that quickly. I can, however, tell you what I’d do. If this is too logical for you, I apologize. Maybe Shaun can do the “buy your own island and conduct mad scientist experiments” blog post on Friday. Let’s assume for these purposes (because it’s easy) that I took the lump sum and only got about 60% of the $300 million. Let’s also assume I have no kids in this scenario, because…well, I don’t. Going the Distance 021: Pining for Better Cake
This was one of Lee’s creations, and it kinda goes against the theory of it being delicious cake. But … sometimes false advertising happens, you know? In Going the Distance, our main character, “You,” has to manage to make his way to delicious cake. Sounds simple, right? But there are deadly spikes to deal with, and a host of other problems that appear each time. Let’s just say You fails more often than You succeeds. After all, it wouldn’t be much of a quest if You could just get cake whenever You wanted, would it? For more background on the … Continue reading Going the Distance 021: Pining for Better Cake
Music to My Ears: Chrono Trigger
NOTE: “Music to My Ears” is a recurring installment based on Chris’s (not so) secret obsession: the music of video games. His Tales of Graces review will be up next week.
In my review for Street Fighter x Tekken, I mentioned how Street Fighter II was one of the big introductions to the world of video game music for me. Ryu’s stage music in particular was one of the driving forces in doing things like getting homework done. And since computers were not a mainstream thing when I was 8 (not to mention mp3 players, iTunes and YouTube), the only way to listen to it was to toss in the cartridge, head to the Sound Test menu and let it rip.
Those foundations laid the groundwork for other tunes that I loved as a kid, like the Castle theme from Super Mario World or Mute City from F-Zero. But the next big landmark was in high school, when I finally got to play what some would call the best RPG of all-time. Continue reading “Music to My Ears: Chrono Trigger”
The Legend of Korra: A show you can’t afford to miss!
The Legend of Korra preview: A masterpiece in the making
The day has finally arrived, everyone! Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra finally hit the world wide web yesterday with the early release of its premiere! That’s right, the first two episodes of the show have officially been released for your viewing pleasure. Haven’t seen them yet? Well then check them out HERE! And if the show itself isn’t enough to convince you to watch it, then perhaps I’ll be able to in this blog…
You see, The Legend of Korra is technically the “sequel” to Nick’s hit television show Avatar: The Last Airbender. A show that followed the adventures and tribulations of a young boy named Aang who woke up after about a hundred years of sleep and found that his people, the airbenders, had been wiped out by the now warring and expansionist Fire Nation. Now Aang isn’t just an airbender, he’s the Avatar, a person who can bend all four elements (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) and is tasked with keeping the world at peace and in balance — a task that his hundred-year sleep pretty much ruined. So he sets off to stop the Fire Nation and restore the world to the way it’s supposed to be, a task that is fully fleshed out in the three seasons that Avatar: The Last Airbender takes up. The show is amazing folks, no joke. It’s on Netflix, GO WATCH IT.
Anyway…
Back to The Legend of Korra. Continue reading “The Legend of Korra: A show you can’t afford to miss!”
Rack Focus: Review: Hunger Games
Once in a great while, my career beckons me in a way that incapacitates me ever so slightly. Did I see The Hunger Games? Yes. Did I like it? Definitely. Do I have time to write a full review? Not this week. For this reason, joining me for the review is At The Buzzer contributor and all-around Superman look-a-like Shaun El-Ters.
Both being fans of the novel by Suzanne Collins, we’re going to first take issue with any and all comparison’s to the Twilight films beyond the simple truth that these are popular stories designed for tweens. The trailer for The Hunger Games is, on its own, compelling viewing, while any clip of Bella Swan (who we most recently saw hungrily eyeing a deer) induces laughter. Both properties are obviously designed to make money, but the expertise in the production of The Hunger Games makes it the sci-fi pulp cult classics are made of. My Favorite Meme
There’s a lot to do on the internet. With Farmville, Facebook, and listening to At the Buzzer, there’s always something to do. However, one of my favorite things to do online is laugh at Internet memes. A meme is defined as an image, video, etc. that is passed electronically from one Internet user to another. Usually this means hilarious pictures, and they deliver more often than not. Internet memes generally follow some sort of template along with words to make the image humorous. An example would be this from the TV show The Office:
So, on that thought, I bring you my three favorite memes ever. Continue reading “My Favorite Meme”
10,000 Hits: Bonus Video
As mentioned on our Facebook page yesterday, we just passed the 10,000 hit milestone! Pretty remarkable considering we had a total of 60 in two months early on. Hopefully you folks are enjoying the show and the site — we certainly appreciate everyone taking time to check us out. To celebrate, we’re sticking you with rewarding you with another golf video! Actually, this one is more like an outtake, with screwed-up shots, bad jokes, and Dave’s terrible choice of shorts. Mixmaster Shaun is on the camera for this one, so you know you’re in for some wacky commentary. We’ll see … Continue reading 10,000 Hits: Bonus Video

Episode 37: Bring Out Your Dead — The guys talk about people dying at imitation parties and sending emails after they’re already dead, use improv to determine a legal ruling, and plow through reader submissions in Buzz In. Also, Chris … Continue reading At the Buzzer (03/22/12)
